Writing Your Cover Letter

Filling out a job application isn’t as simple as just checking a few boxes on a form. In today’s job market, you need to set yourself above the competition. Stand out from other job applicants. One of the best ways to do that is by crafting an amazing cover letter. You can’t use the same generic cover letter for every application you submit. Rather, you need to be creating content that is specific to every job you are applying to.

While your cover letter should focus on you, your skills, and your experiences, you also need to show potential employers why you would be a great fit for their company. A cover letter isn’t just a simple statement anymore. It’s the hook that could just land you your dream job.

Get Creative

When it comes to writing your cover letter, you need to get a little creative. Depending on the job you’re applying for, the person in charge of hiring could be sifting through hundreds of applications, resumes, and cover letters. In order to stand out, you need a creative hook. Maybe you open with a leading question. Maybe open with a small story about an exciting experience you went through. Whatever you do, make sure that your cover letter starts with an interesting statement.

Think Outside the Box

As you begin planning your cover letter, think about different ways in which you can present the information. If you’re a designer, add a design element to your cover letter and resume. Are you applying for position as a writer? Then make your cover letter tells a story. There are endless ways for you to get outside of the box and stand out when it comes to your cover letter.

Show Yourself

No matter what you decide to do in order to stand out, make sure you are showing off a little bit of your personality. While you need to keep things professional, it’s also important for a company to get to know you. For many, this is the first impression and it can go a long way or it can really hurt you. Know why you are a great fit for the company by doing some research and explain why you would fit in so well.

Write for the Job

Above all, even if you don’t feel like you can be creative with your cover letter, you need to write for the job you are applying to. Be sure you mention the position title, company, and some of the position requirements in your letter. Even more important than that, you need to address how you can meet those requirements and become a vital asset to the company.
